Total Wipeout returned to BBC1 tonight after eight years away – but viewers were quick to notice the absence of its much-loved original presenters.
Richard Hammond and Amanda Byram fronted the show during its highly-popular first run, from 2009-2012.
The show, in which contestants complete assault courses over water, was filmed in Argentina, with on the ground interviews from Amanda.
Richard would add a voiceover from the UK afterwards.
However, in tonight’s ep – a re-airing of golden oldie – Top Gear’s Freddie Flintoff and Paddy McGuinness took over narrating duties, earning a mixed reception from fans.
‘So new #TotalWipeout happened,’ said one on Twitter. ‘What did I think? I enjoyed it, really did miss the presence of @AmandaByram though.
‘Perhaps 40 mins is too short a time for an episode, but overall I did really enjoy seeing Wipeout back, can’t wait for next week’s episode!’
Another opined: ‘#TotalWipeout isn’t the same without @RichardHammond and Amanda. I know this is most probably to spike ratings and to see if there is still interest in the show but nothing beats the Saturdays of 2009-2012 being really hyped for wipeout then Doctor who.’
Simpler times!
Said a third: ‘Be nice if they just broughtback @AmandaByram and @RichardHammond for a new series instead of an over hyped rerun.’
Ouch.
Some pointed out the irony of Top Gear hosts Freddie and Paddy taking over another show formally hosted by Richard.
‘Another BBC programme that was better when Richard Hammond presented it,’ said one, as another chimed in: ‘Why are the new #TopGear boys now doing #TotalWipeout ? Prefer Hammond.’
However, Freddie and Paddy did have some fighting their corner.
One said: ‘Freddie and Paddy bounce off each other which works!’
Another added: ‘Guess I’m the only person who preferred it this way then. Can’t bear losing action for the sake of watching a presenter or interviews. I love the “get on with it” style whilst keeping comedic commentary.’
Total Wipeout: Freddie and Paddy Takeover returns on Saturday August 15 2020 at 7.10pm.
