MPs call to scrap rollout of smart motorways over safety fears

Rollout of smart motorways should be paused over safety fears, campaigners and MPs say
There are about 375 miles of smart motorway in England, including 235 miles without a hard shoulder (Picture: PA)

The introduction of smart motorways should be suspended because there is not enough evidence to prove they are safe, MPs have said.

‘All-lane’ smart motorways use the hard shoulder as an active lane to increase capacity on the roads – but critics say they are dangerous.

The Government decided in March 2020 that all future smart motorways would be all-lane versions but MPs have said this is ‘premature’.

A report by the Commons’ Transport Select Committee (TSC) has said there is not enough safety and economic data to justify continuing with the project.

Instead, MPs are suggesting the Government should think about controlled smart motorways, which have a permanent hard shoulder and use technology to regulate traffic flow.

The Department of Transport has said it will ‘consider’ the recommendations.

But relatives of those who have been killed on smart motorways say the report does not ‘go far enough’.

One of the biggest concerns around the safety of smart motorways is over broken-down vehicles being hit from behind.

Claire Mercer, whose husband Jason Mercer died on a smart motorway stretch of the M1 in June 2019, said she thought the conclusions of the report were not ‘strong enough.’

Speaking to Good Morning Britain she said her husband was ‘stranded in a live running lane’.

She added: ‘An HGV came along and ploughed into them because HGVs can’t manoeuvre in the same distance that a Fiat 500 can, it never stood a chance.

‘So it ploughed into them and killed them instantly and even when they were dead across all four lanes of the road and it was a scene of utter carnage, even then, the technology didn’t pick them up.

‘It relied on members of the public to phone it in, they were dead on the road for six minutes before the road was even closed.’

She welcomed the recommendation for the rollout of smart motorways to be paused, as ‘that will give us more time to get into the High Court and get these banned anyway’.

Relatives of those killed on smart motorways have called for the hard shoulder to be permanently reinstalled on the roads.

But the committee was ‘not convinced’ that such a policy would boost safety.

It concluded: ‘The evidence suggests that doing so could put more drivers and passengers at risk of death and serious injury.

‘The Government is right to focus on upgrading the safety of all-lane running motorways.’

The committee’s report said: ‘The Government and National Highways should pause the rollout of new all-lane running schemes until five years of safety and economic data is available for every all-lane running scheme introduced before 2020 and the implementation of the safety improvements in the Government’s action plan has been independently evaluated.’

The TSC urged ministers to ‘consider alternative options for enhancing capacity’ on motorways, namely smart motorways which have the ‘lowest casualty rates’ of all roads across motorways and major A roads in England.

Tory MP Huw Merriman, who chairs the committee, said: ‘Looking at the available evidence, smart motorways do appear to be safer than conventional motorways even once the hard shoulder is removed.

‘However, this evidence is also open to question.

‘Only 29 miles of these all-lane running smart motorways have operated for over five years.

‘It therefore feels too soon, and uncertain, to use this as an evidence base to remove the hard shoulder from swathes of our motorway network.’

The RAC’s head of roads policy, Nicholas Lyes, said: ‘We feel a huge question mark remains over whether it’s right that yet more money is spent on rolling out further all-lane-running smart motorways when there are clearly viable alternatives available.’

A Department for Transport spokesperson said: ‘We’re pleased that the TSC recognises that reinstating the hard shoulder on all all-lane running motorways could put more drivers and passengers at risk of death and serious injury and that we’re right to focus on upgrading their safety, as the Secretary of State committed to doing when he became Transport Secretary.

‘We recognise that improvements have not always been made as quickly as they could have been in the past, but as the committee has set out, the Transport Secretary is absolutely committed to making smart motorways as safe as possible, including committing £500 million on upgrades and the faster rollout of Stopped Vehicle Detection.’

What are smart motorways and why are they controversial?

Smart motorways were first introduced in England in 2014 as a cheaper way of increasing capacity compared with widening carriageways.

There are about 375 miles of smart motorway in England, including 235 miles without a hard shoulder.

An additional 300 miles are scheduled to be opened by 2025.

Smart motorways are ‘smart’ because computers constantly monitor the roads, they have the ability to change the speed limit, keep an eye on congestion and report break-downs.

There are three types of smart motorway. One is ‘controlled’, where people can drive on the hard shoulder.

Another has a ‘dynamic hard shoulder’, where the hard shoulder can be opened, and ‘all-lane’ is where the hard shoulder has become an active lane.

But concerns have been raised following fatal incidents involving broken-down vehicles being hit from behind.

Campaigners against smart motorways say without the refuge of hard shoulders anyone who breaks down has nowhere to go.

Company boss smashed up Ferrari in 100mph crash while drunk and high

A company boss has been jailed after smashing up his £100,000 Ferrari in a 100mph crash while drunk and high on cocaine.

Darren Turner, 46, was almost double the drink-drive limit when he lost control of his high-powered California in Oversley Mill, Warwickshire, on July 23 last year.

He darted straight over a roundabout and clattered into a lamppost before the supercar ended up on the wrong side of the A435 where it nearly hit another vehicle.

Warwick Crown Court heard he had been travelling at more than 100mph in the flash red convertible, which has a top speed of 195mph, after visiting the pub.

Photos of the wreckage show the Ferrari’s rear end smashed in and the front wheel buckled in on itself.

Turner, of Kings Norton, Birmingham, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving as well as driving while over the legal limits of alcohol and cocaine.

He was jailed for a year and banned from the roads for four-and-a-half years.

Turner (46) of Redhill Road, Kings Norton, Birmingham, was jailed for 12 months and banned from driving for four-and-a-half years after pleading guilty to dangerous driving and driving with over the legal limits of alcohol and cocaine in his blood. Prosecutor Ryan Hodgkins said that in July last year Turner was driving his high-powered Ferrari California 2 plus 2 along the A46 dual carriageway in south Warwickshire. He was doing in excess of 100mph in the Ferrari, which has a top speed of 194, when he lost control and hit the central barrier, causing the front of the car to be lifted of the ground. Another driver had to take evasive action as it bounced back onto the carriageway and Turner struggled to control the car as he continued towards the Oversley Mill roundabout.

Judge Andrew Lockhart QC said: ‘People think that offences like this don’t have victims, but they do. The victim is the public’s safety.

‘The potential for harm to other road-users was enormous, you could have caused a fatal road traffic accident.’

The court heard Turner, boss of Turner’s Pallets and Recycling based in Birmingham, narrowly missed an oncoming car during the crash.

Prosecutor Ryan Hodgkinss described how he lost control and hit the central barrier, causing the front of the car to be lifted of the ground.

The other driver had to take evasive action as it bounced back onto the carriageway near the Oversley Mill roundabout.

Defending, Patrick Kelly told the court Turner had purchased the £100,000 super car while he was drunk following the breakdown of his marriage.

He said Turner had struggled with alcohol for the past two decades and took over the Turner’s Pallets business following the death of his father six years ago.

Mr Kelly told the court: ‘He did not receive any counselling for that, and alcohol was not doing it for him, and he turned to drugs.

‘His wife had put up with the drink, but the drugs destroyed the marriage. The buying of the car itself was an act of stupidity.

‘He bought it while in drink, and was paying £1,600 a month. And because he was drunk, his insurance did not pay out.

‘He does not have a great memory of that night. He took alcohol and cocaine, and then got behind the wheel. He should not have taken the car to the pub, and he’s fully aware of that.

‘Since the accident he went on a spiral of depression. He got through that, and has remained dry and clean. He has learned his lesson.’

Mr Kelly added: ‘This was a night of stupidity. He apologises unreservedly for what he’s done. He should have known better.’

Leonardo DiCaprio mobbed as he attends Cop26 after urging world leaders to ‘take crucial climate action’

Leonardo DiCaprio has made an unexpected appearance at Cop26 after urging world leaders to do more about climate change.

The actor, who’s been vocal about the climate crisis over the past few years, was pictured masked up with security on either side as he attended the conference in Glasgow.

Leonardo, who donned a smart blue suit for the event, was mobbed by people as he arrived at the Glasgow SEC Centre on Tuesday.

Elsewhere, he was spotted at fringe events, including in Glasgow’s Maryhill district, where he posed with writer and producer Paul Goodenough for a photo.

It’s thought that the 46-year-old flew in on a commercial airline after some attendees were criticised for using private jets to get to the event.

While he didn’t announce that he would be attending this year’s event, it’s clear he’s been keeping a close eye on it, tweeting: ‘I join @antonioguterres in urging leaders at #COP26 to take crucial #ClimateAction, safeguard our future, and save humanity. Now is the time for ambition, solidarity, and action. @UN.’

Leo attended Cop25 in 2019 in Madrid, dubbing climate activist Greta Thunberg a ‘leader of our time.’

He’s often spoken out about the climate crisis, previously raising $100million (£73million) through his foundation for the cause.

While Leonardo seems to have made an effort since to use more sustainable transport, in 2016, he was slammed for taking a private jet to accept an award.

A rep for Leonardo told US Weekly at the time: ‘He was asked to speak at both Riverkeeper and amfAR events, but the only way to attend the two fundraisers was to hitch a ride with flights that were already planned.

‘Leo helped both events raise millions, donated his own funds, auctioned off his house and had speaking roles in both programs.’

Despite the criticism, Leo’s stood firm in his efforts to address climate change, with it being the focus of his speech at the Oscars the same year.

He pointed out: ‘Climate change is real. It is happening right now. It is the most urgent threat facing our entire species. We need to work together to stop procrastinating…Let us not take this planet for granted. I do not take tonight for granted.’

‘Iceberg’ house that’s double the size underground on sale for £4.7million

'Iceberg' house that's double the size underground on sale for £4.7million
It might look like a bungalow from the outside, but the Langtry House has hidden depths (Picture: Tony Murray/ Metro.co.uk)

It is a truth universally acknowledged that we shouldn’t judge by external appearance, but the impulse remains: try turning up for a job interview in flip-flops.

Similarly, if you see a low-key frontage in a former garage block, a tidy but hardly spectacular wooden fence masking a simple single storey beyond, you may not expect much from the property.

But oh, how wrong you would be. For this fence, in London’s exclusive Hampstead Heath area, hides a vast 3,451sq ft abode described as the capital’s biggest ‘iceberg house’ — one in which it’s all going on below, out of sight, and one which will punch a £4.7million hole in your bank balance.

Langtry House
What’s beneath the surface… (Picture: Tony Murray)
Langtry House
The double-height living room (Picture: Tony Murray)

Less than a decade old, Langtry House is a relative newcomer to the sedate lanes of Hampstead, where its neighbours include Boy George and Pink Floyd’s Nick Mason.

Tucked behind the sort of prestigious Victorian pile more readily associated with one of London’s most higher-class postcodes, it was a mere garage block until opportunity met innovation.

At a funeral, the landowner met Tony Gibber, a songwriter whose tunes have been picked up by Bucks Fizz and Billy Ocean, not to mention advertisers from Barclays to Heathrow Express. Stringent planning restrictions forbade any new-build taller than the existing 11ft-high garages… but why not build down?

Thus began a year of digging (300 lorryloads were excavated) and then a year of building as Langtry House grew not so much out of the ground as into it.

Langtry House
So much light (Picture: Tony Murray)

Carefully tiptoeing around existing buildings and services, the design created a huge lower-ground floor, roughly treble the size of the surface build, swelling the property to a three-bed, three-bath subterranean behemoth by local standards.

The main worry with building downwards is a lack of light, but Langtry House feels more tropical than troglodyte. The ground floor’s full-height glazing grabs sunlight by the truckload and pours it — via a 25ft-tall double-height atrium — downstairs, where a sunken courtyard under a ground-floor void further illuminates proceedings.

Langtry House
There’s plenty of space for a chic garden (Picture: Tony Murray)
Langtry House
The super modern glass interior (Picture: Tony Murray)

And what gorgeous proceedings they are. Largely dressed in modernist white, Langtry House is exquisitely appointed from Poggenpohl-packed kitchen to marble-tiled bathrooms. That sunken courtyard transmits natural light to the lower ground’s two bedrooms via full-height glazing.

Indeed, there’s plenty to crane your neck at, the architecture taking your eyes on vertical journeys to emphasise height and create the feeling of space.

Langtry House
The bedrooms are upstairs but at ground level (Picture: Tony Murray)

Lit by a glass roof, that jaw-dropping central atrium houses the open-plan living/dining area, with the dramatic staircase’s combo of wooden treads and open risers typifying the design’s combination of quality material and thoughtful flow.

Elsewhere on the lower ground floor there’s a family room, plus another space which could be a home office or gym, and the de rigueur fully soundproofed cinema room for when you do want to seal yourself away.

And just to show that not everything is upside down, the proud owner will still take the classical route of going upstairs to bed: the master suite is on the ground floor, overlooking the front patio.

Langtry House
There’s a luxurious entertainment room (Picture: Tony Murray)

The bathroom’s very swish (Picture: Tony Murray)

As for that name, it also hides a story. It comes from Lillie Langtry, a Victorian-era actress and noted beauty. Her cousin Philip Le Breton was chairman of the Metropolitan Board of Works, who campaigned hard to keep Hampstead Heath open for the public despite attempts by its aristocratic owners to enclose and sell it for construction.

The success of said campaign may or may not have been linked to Lillie’s well-known affair with the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII — but for whatever reasons, the Heath remains free for all to enjoy.

Langtry House may not be similarly open to the public, but it honours the idea of freedom and fresh air — and reminds us that no matter what the external appearances, hidden depths may lurk.

Are firework displays going ahead this year and when is Bonfire Night?

People watching fireworks on Bonfire Night
Fireworks displays that are going ahead will look a little different this year (Picture: PA)

You may have noticed that the evenings are darker, Christmas shops are up and running, and the evenings are definitely getting chillier – meaning that November, the month of Bonfire Night, is on the way.

While 2020 saw the majority of big firework events shelved in the wake of Covid and lockdowns, things are likely to be closer to normal this year, now that restrictions have been lifted.

So will firework displays be doing ahead as usual this year – and just when is Bonfire Night?

We’ve got all the information you need.

Are firework displays going ahead this year?

While some of this year’s promised fireworks displays have been cancelled once again – as Covid cases remain stubbornly high in the UK – there are still plenty going ahead this year.

These include Alexandra Palace’s Fireworks Festival, as well as those in Richmond, Crystal Palace, Southwark Park, Wimbledon Park, and Battersea Park.

However some regular displays will not be going ahead – including those in Ravenscourt Park in Hammersmith and Bishops Park in Fulham.

Crystal Palace’s Fireworks Spectacular has also been shelved amid Covid concerns. as has the display at Clissold Park in Hackney.

Elsewhere in the UK, several large displays in Manchester have been cancelled for a second year – including those in Heaton park, Wythenshawe Park, Platt Fields Park and Crumpsall Park.

However some events are going ahead, including the Fallowfield Bonfire Night and Fleetwood Town FC’s annual display at Highbury Stadium.

In Leeds several big displays have been cancelled, although some smaller ones are still happening – including at Yeadon Cricket Club and Roundheigans Rugby Club – while firework fans in Birmingham can attend displays at Edgbaston Stadium and in Bournville.

Sophia Gardens in Cardiff will also be playing host to a display, as will Swansea Council’s free firework display along Swansea Bay – although this isn’t taking place until November 12.

People watching fireworks on Bonfire Night
Many fireworks are back on this year (Picture: Getty Images)

Many of Scotland’s bigger events appear to have been cancelled, although some smaller events are happening, among them Kingsborough Gardens’ display in Glasgow and Musselburgh Racecourse in Edinburgh – although the latter is only open to those with a local EH21 postcode.

As always, you should check local listings for details of displays in your area (if not listed above) and whether or not events are still taking place, as well as confirming the date of the display – not all of them are taking place on Bonfire Night itself.

You should also be aware that entry requirements will vary according to display – some, such as Alexandra Palace for example, require visitors to show either proof of vaccination, a negative Covid test result no less than 48 hours in advance, of proof of immuniy from a previous infection.

With many displays cancelled this year, people may decide instead that a better alternative is to have their own fireworks display at home – but it’s not the safest idea, with thousands of people being injured in home-based bonfire displays every year.

It’s safer to go to a professional display if one is happening near you – but if you do decide to go ahead with fireworks in your own back garden, you should be sure you know how to do so safely, and what to do if someone is injured.

Where can you get silent and low noise fireworks from?

If noisy fireworks aren’t your thing, the good news is there are also a number of silent and low noise displays going ahead this year too.

You can find details of some of the bigger ones here.

If you’re planning to hold your own display and want to keep the noise down, look for fireworks such as Catherine Wheels, sparklers and fountains, which create eye-catching displays without the bangs.

Companies such as Fireworks Kingdom and Dynamic Fireworks have good selections of both.

Richard Okorogheye’s mum prepares to mark his 20th birthday without him

Exclusive: Richard Okorogheye's mother prepares for first birthday without him PA|Evidence Joel
Richard Okorogheye’s mum will join a gathering at her son’s final resting place on what would have been his 20th birthday (PA/Evidence Joel)

The mum of Richard Okorogheye will join friends and family at his graveside to celebrate what would have been his 20th birthday.

Evidence Joel said a small group of loved ones will tell Richard ‘how much we love him and miss him’ on what would have been a milestone occasion.

Ms Joel told Metro.co.uk that the teenager, whose body was found in Epping Forest, Essex, after he went missing in March, was a ‘wonderful’ person who would have been content with a birthday breakfast.

She had been planning a big celebration to mark her son’s transition into adulthood but will instead visit his graveside, where prayers will be read.

Ms Joel said: ‘Richard was such a wonderful person, he never demanded too much, he just strove to do the best he could.

‘He did not want a lot of material things, and when it came to buying him a birthday present I would scratch my head. When he turned 19 I served him breakfast because it was one thing I could do that was tangible.

‘He didn’t want a huge breakfast and he said, “mummy if you can’t do it, don’t worry”. I used to joke with him that he was greedy because his birthday was in November and Christmas was just around the corner.

‘He was very understanding and the memories I have of him blowing out the candles last year sum him up perfectly. Richard was just Richard.’

Richard, who had sickle cell disorder, went missing on March 22, 2021.

He was last seen on CCTV walking towards Epping Forest in Essex. His body was found in the beauty spot, 20 miles from his family home in Ladbroke Grove, West London, on April 5.

Ms Joel told Metro.co.uk that happy memories will be foremost in her mind when she remembers the university student at his final resting place in Gunnersbury, West London, on Thursday.

‘It will be a celebration and we will read prayers and tell Richard how much we love him and miss him,’ she said.

‘Richard wasn’t really into celebrations but on his last birthday we cut the cake and had a dance together. This year I had a big plan for him, because turning 20 is really something to praise God for.

‘Instead we will pay our respects and tell him how much we love him, because we know he is still very much around us.’

Ms Joel, 39, is also remembering her son through a blood donation campaign, supporting a service that massively improved his quality of life.

The Bonded by Blood appeal is aimed at addressing a shortage of donors in the Black community, which is disproportionately affected by sickle cell.

The staff nurse is focussing on using her son’s memory to help others after telling how she felt brushed aside and treated like a ‘little African woman’ when she initially tried to report him missing to the Metropolitan Police.

She has previously spoken to Metro.co.uk for our State of Racism series about the way the force reacted to her reports, when she says Richard was not treated as a high priority.

Ms Joel said she encountered a ‘dismissive’ attitude from police as she tried to raise the alarm over the course of two days and race hampered the way the reports were handled.

An independent investigation addressing her complaints and the way the force handled the case is being conducted by the Independent Office for Police Conduct.

Strictly 2021: Adam Peaty and Eirianedd Munro relationship timeline

Adam Peaty on Strictly and with girlfriend
Adam is juggling family life with Strictly (Picture: PA/Instagram)

The relationships of the celebrities who sign up to Strictly Come Dancing come under the microscope the second they sashay into the ballroom, and Adam Peaty’s is no different.

The Olympian has been forced to call out trolls questioning his relationship with girlfriend Eirianedd Munro, after the art graduate was inundated with cruel comments.

Adam, 26, has been paired with Katya Jones on the show, and their chemistry on the dancefloor left viewers suspecting something was going on – particularly after they appeared to nearly kiss at the end of their Argentine tango.

However, the swimmer has dashed the rumours, and he and Eiri, 23, are going strong.

He wrote on Instagram: ‘To everyone who sees what they want to see, your comments have real life consequences. I will not be lowered or overcome by your gossip. Protect your energy.’

Who is Adam Peaty’s girlfriend?

Eirianedd Munro, or Eiri, is a 23-year-old artist from Wales, who met while Adam was training at Loughborough University.

She was studying for a BA in fine art at the university.

The couple didn’t meet in class, though, but on the dating app Tinder in early 2020.

Are Adam Peaty and Eirianedd Munro married?

The couple are not married, and have been together for nearly two years.

Do they have any kids?

Adam and Eiri are parents to one-year-old son George-Anderson Adetola Peaty, who celebrated his first birthday in September.

Eiri confirmed she was pregnant in April 2020, writing on Instagram: ‘Both Adam and I entered 2020 knowing it had the potential to be the biggest and happiest year of our lives. Years of hard work was due to pay off with me, graduating from university and Adam, competing in his second Olympics. The year looked bright and golden.

‘And then came the corona virus. Whilst our goals weren’t taken, they were propelled somewhere into the future, leaving our year looking rather empty in comparison to how it had looked just a few months ago.

‘Yet the year still promises to be the biggest and happiest year of our lives, just in ways neither of us had planned or expected. It also promises to be the hardest, messiest and craziest so far. It’ll be filled with tears and laughter and sleepless nights and dirty nappies. A lot of dirty nappies.

‘In these moments of difficulty and sadness, we are grateful for our health, for each other and a little jelly bean that has kept us happy and hopeful despite everything.’

Eiri became pregnant just two years into their relationship, and Adam admitted that it was not planned.

He told The Times: ‘I got the call in Australia, with her crying. I was like, “OK, this is going to change my life forever.”’

Both Adam and Eiri often share pictures of George to social media.

Stuart Pearce insists Declan Rice is already better than Roy Keane was at the same age

Stuart Pearce insists West Ham United star Declan Rice is already better than Roy Keane was at the same age, also comparing him to another Manchester United legend in Bryan Robson.

Rice has continued to play a key role for the Hammers this season with David Moyes’ side fourth in the Premier League and set to secure qualification for the knockout stages of the Europa League.

Manchester United have expressed interest in signing Rice as they look to finally solve their issues in midfield, while Chelsea have also been linked with a player they released when he was a teenager.

Pearce, who has played his part in Rice’s development in his role as a first-team coach at West Ham, believes the 22-year-old can go ‘as far as he wants’ in the game.

Pearce played alongside United legend Keane in his early days at Nottingham Forest and when comparing the Irishman to Rice, believes the West Ham star has shown more promise.

‘Every game he takes the field the expectation from me [is that] he needs to be the best player on the pitch, in every game,’ Pearce told talkSPORT.

‘He’s got the tools to do that, the stature to do it. He’s got everything. He is an absolute pleasure to work with at this place. He drives us in midfield.

‘I was sat next to [West Ham coach] Billy McKinlay at the weekend and he said to me: ‘Is he as good as Roy Keane at the same age?’ I said I think he is probably slightly better.

‘We had Roy at Forest with us before he moved on to Manchester United and I’d have to say he is slightly better than Roy. Whether he’ll have the career that Roy had… it is all there for him though.

‘He’s got to stay fit, keep learning and progressing. This season we’re fortunate that he’s added a couple of goals to his game which I always thought he had the ability to do so. He drives past people with the ball, breaks things up. He’s an all-round midfielder, he’s probably a Bryan Robson.’

I have never had any close friends – it doesn’t bother me anymore

I hated school, and I hated break times because it cemented the fact that I was lonely, with no real friends to call my own (Picture: Mollie Quirk)

I remember sitting in my school grounds on a rainy February day in 2009.

I was on a bench not far from the science block and getting saturated by the rain. I’d been excluded from my friendship group over some silly squabble and I felt completely, utterly alone.

I still feel that way today – but unlike back then, I’m happy about it.

Throughout my life, I’ve had people in my life that I would consider ‘friends’, but I would never describe the connection I’ve had with them as concrete, solid or strong. I would go so far as to say I have never had any close friends.

I’d class a close friend as somebody who you might see or speak to all of the time. Somebody who knows everything about you, somebody you can trust with almost everything and anything, and somebody who doesn’t judge you.

While I have that sort of relationship with a few people I’ve met online, I don’t with anyone in real life.

I can see why some might find that idea sad, but to me it is all I’ve ever known and I’m no longer upset at the idea.

But back in the playground, it felt awful. Even today, family members tell me how much of a ‘Larry loner’ I was. I’d sit outside in the rain and eat my lunch while texting my mum. I hated school, and I hated break times because it cemented the fact that I was lonely, with no real friends to call my own.

There were people I would hang out with, on and off (although definitely off more than on) – but I don’t keep in contact with any of them; even back then, we rarely hung out outside of school.

I’ve never had the classic friendship circle that it feels like most women my age have, or have had – you know, the girl’s group chats where nights out are planned, and conversations about relationships, love and sex are had.

I won’t lie, it’s been hard not having had any of that – I felt excluded throughout my teenage years, and even more so when I was nearing 20, starting university and hearing stories of what everybody had done, got up to, experienced, yet I hadn’t done any of that.

But luckily, now I’m 24 and having spent the most part of my life without many pals, loneliness or FOMO doesn’t affect me at all. I’m not impacted by any pressure to live up to being a social butterfly – meeting up with different people each evening, sipping on cocktails, talking about love lives and sharing problems.

Not having many friends, especially in your mid-twenties, isn’t embarrassing or weird. It’s… liberating, freeing and fabulous (Picture: Mollie Quirk)

I admit that my expectation of what female friendships are like is probably a bit too reliant on stereotypes, rather than the reality, but this is probably because I’ve never experienced them firsthand.

I like to think that if I’d had a large friendship group from a young age, I don’t think I’d be who I am today. In fact, I know I wouldn’t.

I’d have spent my entire life trying to fit in – I’d have probably had sex by now just to feel ‘normal’, I’d have most likely set foot in a club, I might have enjoyed drinking alcohol more, or have been to a festival.

Sure, having a big group of friends might have meant that I wouldn’t have suffered with mental health problems as much, or social anxiety, because maybe I’d have felt more included – or maybe I’d have been slimmer because I’d have wanted to conform a bit more.

But having this typical close-knit girl group wouldn’t have been worth changing myself for, and I’m content with the way it has turned out.

Yet I do think that not having a group of mates to grow up with has stunted my development into womanhood. While people my age are at bars making memories with their friends, I’m at home with my cat watching TV. When people my age are going to the cinema with their boyfriends, I’m at home scrapbooking or writing letters to my pen pal.

In some senses, I’m still that girl eating her sandwiches by herself, texting her mum and feeling lost and alone. But, today, I’m 24 years old with a – dare I say – successful career in journalism and writing, a solid history of higher education, and a select few nice people that I mainly keep in touch with via WhatsApp and social media.

I might still be a ‘loner’ in some people’s eyes – after all, I probably am a little – but I’ve made peace with that.

I’m glad everything has worked out the way it has because it’s made me strong, independent and I don’t rely on anybody else for my own happiness.

I don’t have to fit my life around the lives of others. I admit that I probably sound selfish, and, yeah, perhaps I am. After all, I’ve never had to consider the feelings or schedules of others because nobody has ever done that for me.

Not having many friends, especially in your mid-twenties, isn’t embarrassing or weird. It’s… liberating, freeing and fabulous.

As you grow older, learn and discover more about yourself, you might just realise that even the hardest, loneliest journey was needed in order to get you to where you are today.
