Gabriel Magalhaes ‘wants to join Arsenal’ and the Gunners have made strides toward signing the Lille defender amid interest from Manchester United, according to reports in France.
Mikel Arteta is in the market for a centre-back to strengthen his defence and the left-footed Brazilian could be the answer to his issues.
The 22-year-old has been chased by top European clubs including United, Napoli and Everton, however, Lille-based publication La Voix du Nord claim that Gabriel has a move to the Emirates at the top of his list.
The report states that he has been in touch with Arsenal representatives earlier this week and was impressed by their pitch.
Arteta’s side have pressed ahead in their efforts to recruit the defender, who is being priced at €30 million (£27.1m).
The French publication rule Napoli out of the race, but insist that United are yet to have their final say on the matter, meanwhile, advances from Everton have cooled off.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is also on the hunt for a central defender and even told Nathan Ake last month that he ‘needed a left-footed centre-back’, before the Dutchman completed a move to Manchester City.
Former Tottenham midfielder Jermaine Jenas believes a move for free agent Jan Vertonghen would be a smart choice after the 33-year-old’s contract expired at Spurs this summer.
He told BBC Radio 5 Live: ‘I keep touting him around everywhere but I’m sorry, Jan Vertonghen on a free is the best free transfer centre half out there.
‘If you can get Harry Maguire back on the right side and get an actual ball-playing centre-half as a left-sider, that little dynamic may change things for them as well and he’s free.
‘Manchester United will know what they’re doing, they’ll have a plan but defensively they’re miles off it.
‘I know how good he is. It baffles me when I see him in the stand every week because I know how good he this player is.
‘I’ve played with him, I’ve watched him and on a free transfer, it just makes sense.’
