Daredevil star Peter Shinkoda has claimed a storyline for his character Nobu was axed because ‘nobody cares about Chinese or Asian roles’.
The Canadian film actor, who is of east-Asian descent, spoke about his experiences on set at a Q+A as part of Save Daredevil-Con.
Speaking alongside Geoffrey Cantor (who played Mitchell) and Tommy Walker (Francis), Peter revealed that he had a storyline with Madame Gao (Wai Ching Ho) axed because executive producer Jeph Loeb forbid the team from writing it.
He told those watching the livestream: ‘There was a previous storyline that many of the writers, who I adore, love them, they gave me privy to a storyline that was supposed to go.
‘They had planned for months to write and implement into shooting but they were prevented.’
‘I’m kind of reluctant to say this, but I’m gonna take it,’ he explained. ‘I apologize to Tommy and to Jeff and I’m gonna take this moment but I have to because…. because I just have to.
‘I’m not into really protecting certain things anymore, but Jeph Loeb told the writers room not to write for Nobu and Gao.’
‘This was reiterated many times by many of the writers and showrunners, that “nobody cares about Chinese people, and Asian people”.
‘There were three previous Marvel movies, a trilogy called Blade, that was made where Wesley Snipes kills 200 Asians each movie. Nobody gives a s**t, so don’t write about Nobu and Gal.
‘They were forced to put their storyline down and drop it.’
Peter then added that he felt that the industry had ‘developed’ since the incident, which occurred around 2014-2015, and that people were more aware of the issue now.
Metro.co.uk has contacted Marvel for comment and clarification.
Despite being a firm favourite on Netflix, Marvel announced that Daredevil, and the extended TV universe it had built involving Luke Cage, Iron Fist and Jessica Jones, were all ending in November 2018.
A fight to bring back the show in some form has been occurring ever since.
On what could have potentially happened for his character, Peter added that Nobu’s storyline would have involved plans from the comics.
‘I have privy to that storyline, because they explained it to me, and they were very apologetic that they couldn’t follow through with it, but their hands were tied,’ he explained.
‘It was very interesting, the storyline about having to go there under the guise of getting some kind of a transplant and medical reasons and a lot of paperwork and bureaucracy was fudged so that Nobu can get into the country.’
‘All that backstory was dropped and the writers told me that they’d read it and they were reluctant to do it but I was so stoked about, including the storyline, but they were prevented,’ the star said.
‘So, I had to concoct this other storyline. And then, you know, rock that material that I was given. Regretfully, I didn’t get to ever explore that.’
Daredevil is available now on Netflix.
