An armed Black Lives Matter protester was shot dead while he pushed his quadruple-amputee girlfriend’s wheelchair, his mother said.
Garret Foster was killed during a demonstration on Saturday by a man who plowed his vehicle into protesters.
Police said Foster was gunned down by the driver as he approached the vehicle with a rifle. However, Foster’s mother gave a different version of events during an interview with Good Morning America on Sunday.
Sheila Foster said that her son had been pushing his fiancee, Whitney Mitchell, in a wheelchair through an intersection when the driver began shooting.
‘And this gentleman got out of his car and started firing shots, and my son was shot three times,’ Foster said.
Garrett Foster was taken to Dell Seton Medical Center where he was pronounced dead a short time later. His mother did not say whether he had a gun when he was shot, but said he did have a license to carry.
Witness Michael Capochiano described the chaotic moment Foster was shot to The Statesman.
Capochiano said, ‘there were people around the car, yelling, and people sounding like they were frightened.’
He said the driver then pointed a gun outside the window and began shooting.
‘(Foster) dropped to the ground when he got shot,’ Capochiano said.
Austin police said the driver is in custody and is cooperating with police, although he has not yet been identified.
According to police, there were about 50 protesters gathered outside the police department on Sunday.
