The show show follows two twin brothers, Chris and Xand, who are both doctors as they respond to the coronavirus outbreak in the UK.

It’s a stark portrayal of just how much damage Covid-19 can and has done to people and their loved ones, and it left viewers distraught.

Chris is an infectious diseases doctor at UCL Hospital in London but when coronavirus hit he was asked to return to work on the wards for the first time in 10 years.

His twin brother, Xand, is a specialist in public health and has worked in medical emergencies around the world, helping people in disasters.

He also returned to lend a hand on home soil when Covid hit but actually contracted the virus in March 2020.

The show follows him as he juggles work with long-term recovery from the virus, which has left him feeling tired and breathless, and with an irregular heartbeat which he believes may have been caused by Covid.

There’s a particularly emotional moment in the programme where doctors have to shock Xand’s heart to try to get it to beat regularly again, and Chris watches, terrified of what could happen to his twin.

Viewers also said the show proves how we cannot stop taking this virus seriously, given the damage it can do.

‘It brings home the sheer severity of coronavirus and how little we yet know about its effects. Please don’t stop taking this seriously!’ one person said.

Someone else wrote: ‘@xandvt I’d like to thank you and Chris for an amazing and honest programme ‘Surviving the virus:My brother and me” about Covid 19.

‘Your programme should be a compulsory watch for all those who’s noses hang out of masks and who continue to flout lockdown rules.’

Another viewer said: ‘If you want a glimpse into what Hospitals faced during the COVID19 peak please watch Surviving the Virus… on BBC1 at the moment with the always excellent @DoctorChrisVT & @xandvt. Many non medics I know still don’t understand what happened and why normal life had to stop.’

The show also followed several other heartbreaking stories, including paying a visit to Philia Lodge care home in Peterborough, where one third of the residents died from the virus.

It also told Florentino’s story, a restaurant owner from North London who was fighting the virus in intensive care for weeks while his family weren’t even allowed to visit him as they waited for news every day.
