Former Arsenal boss Unai Emery wants a reunion with Matteo Guendouzi in his new post at Villarreal, according to reports.
The Frenchman has been frozen out of the squad since he grabbed Neal Maupay by the neck after the 2-1 defeat to Brighton on June 20.
Mikel Arteta even reportedly made the 21-year-old train alone, apart from the rest of his team-mates, and he is now facing an uncertain future at the club.
Interest in the midfielder has been ramping up with the opening of the summer transfer window and Foot Mercato claim Emery – who was recently appointed Villarreal boss – wants Guendouzi to join him at the Spanish club.
Emery was at the helm when the youngster was recruited from French Ligue 2 side Lorient in 2018 and the former Arsenal boss utilised him a lot over his 18-month stint at the Emirates.
The report states that Guendouzi is Emery’s priority signing for this transfer window.
Discussions over a loan move with an option to buy have begun, while Barcelona are also said to be keen on the midfielder.
Guendouzi would likely have the benefit of more game time at Villarreal over Barca, which could be more of an appeal.
Despite his and Mesut Ozil’s lack of involvement in the latter stages of the season, missing out completely on Arsenal’s FA Cup final win over Chelsea, Mikel Arteta insisted that both players are a part of the squad’s success.
‘They’re all part of it,’ said the Spaniard after the 2-1 win over Chelsea.
‘We don’t have here Matteo and Mesut but they’re a big part of it because they all contributed in here.
‘They all should be a big part of it. All of them contributed to this trophy.’
