Roman Kemp is taking a break from his Capital FM breakfast show following the death of a close friend.

The presenter, 27, and his fellow Capital Breakfast hosts Sonny Jay, 27, and Sian Welby, 33, came off air mid-way through the show on Tuesday after being told that a friend they had all worked with had died.

A Capital spokesperson said: ‘We can confirm that Rob Howard and Lauren Layfield will host Capital Breakfast for the rest of this week.’

The trio have been granted leave by station executives in light of the tragic news, with Rob, 31, and Lauren, 32, taking over in their absence.

Listeners had noticed that Tuesday’s show was cut short after an interview with Little Mix, with the presenters leaving after being told the news.

An industry source told The Sun: ‘Roman and his colleagues are in complete shock, they can’t believe someone they were all close to is gone.

‘They’ve all been left completely shattered by the upsetting news and are taking some time to grieve and digest the tragedy.

‘It’s a tough time for them all right now.’

Roman, Sonny and Sian are expected to resume the show in the coming weeks.

Fans took to Twitter to share their condolences following the tragic news, writing: ‘@romankempsending love after the passing of your friend. X’

Others added: ‘Just heard the news. Sending love @romankemp @Sianwelby @SonnyJay’ and ‘@romankemp@Sianwelby @SonnyJay hope your all okay sorry to hear the sad news’.

Roman Kemp has hosted the breakfast show since 2017, initially with Vick Hope, before Sonny joined the pair full-time in 2018. Vick announced that she was leaving in February 2020, before Sian joined Roman and Sonny to host the show since March.
