Manchester United should sign Mario Mandzukic on free transfer after Jadon Sancho, says Owen Hargreaves

Former Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves says Ole Gunnar Solskjaer can save millions in the transfer market by signing Mario Mandzukic on a free transfer this summer.

The Red Devils are prioritising a move for Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho but the Bundesliga giants are refusing to budge from their £108million valuation of the England international.

While United remain confident of landing Sancho, that deal would wipe out most of their budget in a summer in which Solskjaer had planned on signing three players.

One of those is a centre forward as Solskjaer is keen on signing a competitor for current first choice Anthony Martial.

However, while Hargreaves agrees the club need a centre forward, he thinks Solskjaer can get around his budget problem by signing free agent Mandzukic, who terminated his contract with Qatari outfit Al-Duhail Sports Club in July.

‘Defensively they were one of the better teams in the league, but in terms of goalscoring they were way behind Liverpool and City,’ said Hargreaves.

‘You can do with a 20-goal scorer but I think I’d take Jadon [Sancho] first and then maybe get Mandzukic on a free.’

The Croatia international was a target for United last summer and again in January, before he opted for a move to Qatar.

One concern for Solskjaer may be the striker’s age, as he turned 34 during football’s suspension.
