Supernanny USA aired very emotional scenes on Monday night, with viewers left praising Jo Frost at helping mum Maria deal with her postpartum depression.

The episode followed mum-of-four Maria who was looking for support at home from her partner Ben, who is often away with the army.

It came to light that Maria has been struggling with postpartum depression and wanting Ben to help her out more, Jo was seen orchestrating an ‘uncomfortable’ conversation with the couple, where she encouraged them to address their deeper issues.

Jo – who is known for dishing out home truths – confronted Ben for not helping out enough with childcare, while Maria confessed that she doesn’t feel good about herself anymore and breaking down in tears.

Ben stood his ground at first and told Jo that he didn’t want to talk about his relationship with Maria or have it painted in a ‘bad light’, before realising that their relationship directly impacts on their children too.

Jo told the pair: ‘I first want to acknowledge that you are both dealing with postpartum depression. This is about the two of you, today it wasn’t about the children’s behaviour being naughty, it was about them having direction, needing to be guided.

‘I don’t see from you Ben an active role from you, when you’re home, taking care of the kids. If you know it’s been tough, why aren’t you saying, “I’ve got this.”‘

Jo then turned to Maria and pressed: ‘Am I wrong? Does Ben do enough with the kids? Why is it really difficult for you both to be honest with each other? You need to be honest with each other.’

Fans watching at home praised Jo for her direct, tough love approach, while admitting their hearts were breaking for Maria.

‘My heart is breaking for her,’ tweeted one viewer, while another said: ‘Tuning into this weeks #SupernannyUSA – think there’s always so much we can learn and think about. It’s refreshing seeing @Jo_Frost talking about the relationship parents have with one another as well as with their children.’

One fan said: ‘Uncomfortable viewing tonight on #SupernannyUSA I just want to give the mum a hug.’

While another agreed: ‘Wow this is an emotional episode already.’

Jo was seen encouraging Maria and Ben to spend some alone time together as a couple to work on their relationship, as well as supporting Maria at her doctors appointment to discuss her postpartum depression.

Others scenes showed Jo persuading Maria to attend a kids’ class with her daughter, as an opportunity to meet other mums, so she doesn’t feel so alone.

Supernanny USA airs Mondays at 9pm on E4.
