Paul Mescal has credited his Normal People co-star Daisy Edgar-Jones for being the reason behind his Emmy Awards nominations.
Ahead of this year’s awards, the full list of Emmy nominees was released on Tuesday, with actor Paul, 24, landing a nod for lead actor in a limited series or movie for his role as Connell in the novel adaptation.
Daisy was noticeably absent from the list, but it sounds like Paul is hoping to win his gong for the both of them, as he insisted Daisy was the one that made his nomination happen.
Reacting to news of his Emmys nod on Instagram, Paul poked fun at his TV alter-ego Connell and his tendency to be a bit emotional, as he shared a screenshot of Connell crying in the BBC Three series and added the subtitle: ‘(sob).’
Paul wrote alongside his post: ‘My actual face right now! Thank you to absolutely everyone @element_pictures, @hulu and @bbcthree! Lenny [Abrahamson] I will forever been indebted to you❤️(sic).’
He then said: ‘@daisyedgarjones this only exists because of you and [your] extraordinary talent end of!’
Paul then joked: ‘Thank you for all your beautiful messages I’m gonna go away and cry now x.’
Despite Normal People being a huge hit with fans when it was released on Hulu and BBC Three back in April, Daisy appeared to be snubbed from the leading actress in a limited series or movie category for her role in the series as Marianne.
Instead, nominees listed were Cate Blanchett (for Mrs. America), Shira Haas (Unorthodox), Regina King (Watchmen), Octavia Spencer (Self Made) and Kerry Washington (Little Fires Everywhere).
Fans, meanwhile, are desperate for a second series of Normal People to hit screens, with director Lenny Abrahamson revealing that while there are currently no ‘concrete plans’ for a follow-up, he’d love to revisit Marianne and Connell.
‘I have a sneaking thing in the back of my head that if everybody was willing, and if the stars aligned, I’d love to revisit them in five years and find out what happened, where they are,’ he told Deadline.
Until then, Paul has been busy bagging his next TV role which will see him take on a four-part thriller, titled The Deceiver, from Derry Girls creators Lisa McGee and Tobias Beer.
It’s a far cry from the coming-of-age story that was Sally Rooney’s Normal People and Paul has admitted he is nervous over how viewers will react to his new character Sean McKeough, who becomes caught up in tragedy.
‘I had two days off after I wrapped filming on Normal People and then I started filming The Deceived. This is my second ever TV role,’ Paul said of the show.
‘As for whether I was nervous? Totally. I don’t have enough experience to feel completely comfortable stepping onto set but everybody was so welcoming and kind on this show.
‘I’d be worried if that [nervous] feeling wasn’t present because I don’t think nerves are necessarily a bad thing.’
